T-Mobile changes to fair usage policy
On Monday 1th of January, T-mobile announced that they were going to make a cut to their fair usage policy for online browsing, the quota for unlimited internet currently stands at 1GB, T-mobile are now proposing to cut this amount down the 500mb. Originally this cut was going to be enforced to all new and existing customers, but rightfully so, existing customers where not happy with this. As a result T-mobile have how turned around and said they will only implement this change to new and upgrading customers.
What does this data allowance change mean?
To the average user, this 500MB cap will not be a very big deal. If you just use your mobile internet for information and general browsing, 500MB is more than adequate to accommodate even the most frequent browser. The only time this cap will start to take affect is for the phone user that downloads a lot of data via their phone.
T-mobile however are still happy for you to go over this 500mb fair usage without charge, you will still be able to browse and check emails, but streaming and downloading will be severely restricted.
You can purchase a mobile broadband booster package; this will once again allow you your 1GB monthly data allowance. But why should you have to pay for a service, many other networks currently offer their customers for free?
I fear that this change may see many of the heavy internet users currently with t-mobile, finding another network, better suited to accommodate their needs.
What has got us about this T-mobile move is they currently offer contracts with the new android phones allowing users 3GB of usage, you cannot go from 3GB to 500mb and not feel the pinch. T-mobile also overlooked the fact that contractual changes need 30 days notice.
Thankfully this change does not affect existing customers; this new cap only applies to new and upgrading T-Mobile customers as of the 1st of February 2011.
If this move from t-mobile has put you right of a contract from them fear not, 3 mobile currently offer no limit for their internet on the one plan. Other networks such as 02, Vodafone and virgin all offer a 1GB limit for some of their contract plans.
